Scorpions Fan Club President Others Shock About The Cancellation Of Nigeria Trip

Oct 28, 2009, 5:30 PM | Article By: Lamin Drammeh

Mr Bai Abdoulie Cham, the President of the National Scorpions Fan Club, Saihou Ceesay, the Public Relations Officer of the National Scorpions Fan Club, and Alieu Leigh, the Assistant PRO, who is also the author of the famous song [Sanjaliyeh] have joined the scores of other members of the Scorpions Fan Club to express sadness following the cancellation of their proposed trip to attend the FIFA U-17 World Cup in Nigeria.

The members of the fan club were reported to have undergone a series of rehersals in a bid to recruit new songs for the Baby Scorpions ahead of the World Cup which is currently taking place in Nigeria, but it was later announced that the trip was called-off, according to reports from the Football Association on Monday. No reason was advanced for this sudden move.

In an exclusive interview with Pointsport at his residence in Bakau New Town regarding the cancellation of their trip to Nigeria, the President of the National Scorpions Fan Club, Bai Abdoulie Cham admitted that he was shocked when he and his colleagues received the news.

He said they have since tried to find out the reason as to why the proposed trip has been cancelled but the FA mentioned no reason pertaining to the cancellation of the trip.

"There is a big question mark over the cancellation of this trip because even the F.A were not in a position to tell us exactly the reason behind the cancellation. They only told us that the decision was from the higher authorities but we have taken it in good faith," Bai Cham told this reporter on Monday.

Mr. Cham who was quite unimpressed with the performance of the Gambian side in their 2-0 defeat to the Asian champions, Iran last Sunday further suggested that the reason as to why the President decided to cancel the trip might be due to the fact that he was equally unsatisfied with the performance of the players or the level of commitment which has caused public debate among the football fans over the past few days.

The disappointed President Bai Cham was however quick to dismiss claims that this might have a psychological impact on the commitment of the members of the National Scorpions Fan Club who have since expressed sadness following the cancellation of their trip to Nigeria, despite all the personal efforts they have put in place ahead of the FIFA's third biggest tournament where The Gambia National U-17 team is making its second appearances. He used the platform to thank the Gambian leader for his intention of taking the fans to Nigeria even though it had never materialised and went further to urge his colleagues to remain committed to their duties to the fan club at all times in order to push Gambian football to the highest level.

"This is not the end of our future in the fan club, we will be even more stronger now than ever before because when we formed the fan club sometime in 2001, we were not even thinking of traveling with the team to international competitions and hence that dream has been achieved, we should be thankful to the Almighty Allah and then the President who has made that dream a reality, the PRO Saihou Ceeasy and his Assistant Alieu Leigh were quoted as saying by our reporter on Monday.

The objective of the fans club, the duo continued is not only limited to away matches but to support them both morally and financially.

The duo went further to call on the Gambian people to rally behind the team in a bid to put an end to what could be described as their worst start at the FIFA U-17 World Cup tournament currently in session in Nigeria. They are also of the belief that the team would recover from their disappointing start to the championship when they entertain Neitherland and Colombia as part of the last group c fixtures which will take place in Calabar later today and Saturday, respectively.
