The government of the republic of China on Taiwan, ROC, has provided support for the Gambia Armed Forces, GAF, to renovate an old colonial building in Bakau to be used by the GAF Training Centre.

The ROC ambassador Samuel Chen alongside GAF’s CDS Lt. General Ousman Badgie, on Monday 6th May 2013 presided over the formal commencement of the construction project.

Speaking at the occasion, Ambassador Chen said, the project is being funded by the Taiwanese government at a grant of $100,000.

According to him, the building will include a lecture room with 75 seat capacities for trainers, reception room, conference room, offices, a coffee room and a beautiful backyard.

“I hope that the renovation project will not only institute a training centre, but also a beautiful public area at Fajara Barracks and the nearby habitants,” he stated.

He used the opportunity to commend President Jammeh for his vision to transform the Gambia Armed Forces.

For his part, CDS Lt. General Ousman Badgie, thanked the Taiwanese government through Ambassador Chen for the intervention.

He said the project when completed would help GAF to have more space for developing the capacities of its officers.

“Once it’s completed it would expand the ability of GAF Training School at Fajara Barracks,” he said.

While stating that the work is expected to be completed within two months, he tasked the contractors- GAF Engineering Company to finish the work on time.

GAF’s Chief Engineering Officer, Col. Paul Gomez, reassured the donors and CDS that the work would be delivered on time and would be of a very good quality.

He then concluded by saying that GAF Engineering Unit is at the centre of GAF’s development.
