For the past couple of years, we have been calling for a re-launch of public transport system in the country.
It was a popular demand of the Gambian people, who struggle on a daily basis to get to work or travel to other parts of the country.
Well, it seems the government has heeded to that call by re-launching the public transport system with the commissioning of 50 new buses.
We have always emphasized in this and other pages of this paper, that there was an absolute need to provide a cheaper and more reliable means of transportation in the country.
Since the collapse of Gambia Public Transport Corporation (GPTC), the absence of an affordable and efficient public transport service was akin to a nightmare in the country.
With these new buses under the newly-established Gambia Transport Service Company (GTSC), we hope to have an efficient and affordable means of public transport across the country.
The coming of the new busses should hopefully facilitate easy and timely movement of goods and people.
We are anticipating that the new investment would also provide employment opportunities for many people, especially the youths.
While commending the government and SSHFC for the initiative, we challenge the GTSC to ensure that the traveling public receives the best service as GPTC used to provide or even better than that.
Finally, we urge the new management to the new company to recruit competent staff to man the buses, and their entire administration to ensure sustainability.
