Promoting grassroots democracy

Apr 14, 2011, 3:24 PM

Accountability and transparency are essential elements in any form of democratic set up.

We firmly believe that it is not only central government that should be accountable to the people, but all those institutions that are entrusted with public funds.

We, therefore, welcomed the move taken by the Beakanyang Kafoo to hold a congress and an Annual General Meeting.

Organizations should always organize such meetings to brief their members on the activities they undertook on their behalf.

More importantly, members must be regularly updated on the funds managed in the name of people by their institutions.

It is this regard that we wish to congratulate the members of Beakanyang for successfully holding the congress and AGM.

Such moves would, no doubt, promote democracy at the grassroots level, since members would have the opportunity to hold their leaders accountable.

The fact that one holds a congress, also gives members the opportunity to elect the leaders of their choice.

To increase democratic participation by encouraging residents to register to vote, obtain national identity cards, and participate in national and local elections are all ways of promoting democracy at grassroots level.

Indeed, it is essential to foster democracy in the rural communities, thus encouraging women, in particular, to take part in local elections.

Once more, we congratulate the Beakanyang for partnering with rural communities to improve democratic practices in their area.
