Feb 3, 2012, 2:11 PM

Almost all the major streets in the Greater Banjul Area are full with vendors selling oranges. The fruit no doubt is delicious and rich in essential nutrients like Vitamin C, B1 and A. They are grown in abundance in many part of urban Gambia, but yet are under -utilised.

There are many health benefits of this wonderful fruit, and we need to develop the sector to make the best use of this nice fruit.

The delicious and juicy orange fruit contains an impressive list of essential nutrients, vitamins, minerals for normal growth and development and overall well-being of humans.

Even though the fruit is also used in the preparation of desserts, jams and jellies, most people here use the raw one.

The orange fruit is nice and good for the body, so why don’t we make it accessible all year round.

The government and local investors needs to look into the huge potential in this sector, and start providing small factories to help preserve and package the fruit.

Such a development would add value to the fruit, and make it available all year round, and the firms could also create employment for the youths.

Considering its enormous benefits and cheap availability and taste, we encourage all to go for oranges.
