A UK-based charitable organisation has embarked on a massive eye operation exercise at the Gunjur Health Centre.

Operafrica's representative Paul Stafford told journalists on Monday at the Gunjur Health Centre that the eye operation exercise is funded by Ackworth School in North England.

The organisation, working alongside Sightsavers International, aims to conduct 50 cataract operations every year, says Mr Stafford, adding that since it started in 2006, over 200 people have benefited from the free eye operation exercise in Gunjur and its environs.

This year some patients from Pirang benefited also from the programme, he noted, and said there is a plan in the pipeline to extend their annual eye operation exercise to other parts of the country.

Jadith Stafford, also a member of Operafrica, said the organisation has donated an ambulance to Gunjur Sambuyang and has a horticultural garden in Berending village in Kombo South.

She applauded Ackworth School of North England for its generosity towards her organisation.

The organisation would give more support to the people of the Gambia in the near future, she added.
