On the Imam Baba Leigh issue

Apr 25, 2013, 9:33 AM | Article By: Malick Jallow

Like the rest of the country, I have watched as the cloud and mystery surrounding the whereabouts of Imam Baba Leigh continues to capture the public imagination. Imam Leigh is a bona-fide citizen of the Gambia and entitled to protection and promotion of his welfare by the State.

It is therefore vitally important that in a matter of such fundamental public concern, the State, as the custodian of the public interest, take overt, concrete and effective steps in addressing the whereabouts of Imam Leigh and ensuring his welfare.

In the absence of that, growing credence will be given to the perception that the State is not doing all it can on this matter.

Indeed Imam Leigh’s family have a legitimate expectation, in the circumstances, to know about his whereabouts or get an acceptable explanation from the State on why his whereabouts cannot be established.

It owes it to Imam Leigh, his Family and the Country at large.
