The Golden Football tournament organised by the Nigeria High Commission, as part of activities marking the 50th Anniversary of Nigeria, kicks off this morning, Friday 17th September 2010 at 8.30am, at the Manjai Kunda Sports Complex between Nigeria and Sierra Leone.
The objective of the football tournament is to further strengthen the already existing relationship between brothers and sisters from African nations.
Six teams have confirmed their participation in the first-ever football tournament organised by a diplomatic mission in The Gambia. They are Nigeria, Libya, Mauritania, Sierra Leone, Senegal and The Gambia Sports Journalists Association.
The participating teams were divided into two groups of three teams. Group A comprises Nigeria, Sierra Leone and Senegal, and Group B the Gambia Sports Journalists Association, Mauritania and Libya.
The official kick-off of the 10-day tournament will be taken by the Nigeria High commissioner to The Gambia, Her Excellency Mrs. Esther John Audu (ORG).
A Golden Cup is awaiting the winner of the tournament whose final will be held on September 27th at the Serekunda East Mini Stadium.
