NIA officer testifies in Presidents' gift theft case

An  NIA operative responsible for Sibanor ward in Foni Bintang District, on Tuesday 19th January 2010, testified at the Brikama Magistrates' Court before Magistrate J.A. Effim in the ongoing trial involving Yaya Jallow, Ebrima Beyai and Sarjo Ceesay, who were alleged of stealing President Jammeh's gift.

In his testimony, the operative told the court that he knew the accused persons and could recall on 10th September 2009, when he went to Sibanor to attend the distribution of sugar which was donated by President Jammeh as a Ramadan gifts to the people of Foni Bintang District.

According to him, the Foni Bintang Karania District was divided into two sectors during the time of distribution, namely the villagers and authorities.

He said at the distribution centre, the 1st accused briefed the gathering that they have received 500 bags of 25kg, which they shared among the people of the district and the authorities.

According to him, after the distribution there was a push and pull between the 1st accused and the fomer lady councilor of Foni Bintang Karanai District, Nano Touray on the grounds that, Nano brought a labourer who was involved in the distribution team, and claimed that the man should get 2 bags of sugar, of which the 1st accused told her that the sugar was finished.

The operative further told the court that, out of 500 bags of sugar, 453 bags were distributed and 47 bags were missing.

The case was adjourned to 2sn February 2010.
