The new permanent representative of The Gambia to the United Nations, Dr David Darol Tommy Tuesday presented his credentials to UN Secretary General Ban Ki Moon, according to information gathered from the United Nations website.
Mr. Tommy got to the position after 33 years in the service of international cooperation.
The last position he held until his retirement from the UN in early 2012, was Regional Director for Africa at the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO), in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.
Previously, from 2007 to 2008, he was head of the UNIDO office in New York, after having held other senior positions within the organization.
Before joining the UN, Mr. Tommy worked at the Organisation of African Unity (OAU), where he headed the Section of Industrial Technology.
He also worked for the Government of the Gambia, where he held various positions. Prior to his appointment as Gambia’s new representative to the UN in November last year, Mr Tommy worked with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
Replacing Mrs Susan Waffa Ogoo, current minister of Foreign Affairs, Mr Tommy holds a doctorate in philosophy and a master’s degree in science.
