The Minister of Youths and Sports, Sheriff Gomez on Friday 16th April 2010 inaugurated the new members of the National Sports Council, at a ceremony held at the Independence Stadium VIP Lodge in Bakau.
Speaking at the inauguration ceremony, the Minister of Youths and Sports, Sheriff Gomez said his ministry should be seen "as the platform for empowering youths as effective aggregates in national development and for the attainment of excellence in sports through mass participation."
Gomez also said that the task ahead is no doubt a daunting one, but expressed confidence that with commitment, focus and dedication, they would surmount the challenges confronting them.
He also urged them to work as one and not to be divided on regional lines or rural/urban sentiments, adding that "we are Gambians and should make sure that justice guides our action towards the common good," as enshrined in our national anthem.
He also urged the council members to always endeavour to consult one another and execute their duties without fear or favour, affection or ill-will for the development of sports for excellence through mass participation.
Sulayman Bun Njie, the Chairman of the National Sports Council thanked the Minister of Youths and Sports for identifying them and having confidence in them to serve in this important council for a term of four years. He promised that they will live up to expectations.
He also urged associations and federations that are not yet registered with the National Sports Council to do so with immediate effect, as they want all sporting activities to be officially recognised and registered.
