The vice chairman of the Gambia Football Association (GFA) Normalization Committee, Alhagie Omar Sey, on 21 December 2012 presided over the launching of Nda Mariam Jagne Family Foundation at the Paradise Suites Hotel in Senegambia.
In his launching statement, Omar Sey applauded Pa Modou Jagne and his wife Mariam Njie-Jagne for the initiative.
According to Sey, Pa Modou is always committed and determined to play for The Gambia.
He seized the opportunity to call on other Gambian players to emulate Pa Modou for his laudable initiative in contributing towards maternal health and football in the country.
Sey also used the occasion to call on Gambians to rally behind Pa Modou and Nda Mariam Family Foundation in their endeavour to realize the foundation’s objectives of supporting maternal health and sport in The Gambia as well as complementing government’s efforts.
The deputy permanent secretary at the Ministry of Youth and Sports, Malang Jassey, hailed Pa Modou for his wonderful initiative of rendering support to sectors such as the health and sport, a bid to complement government’s efforts.
Jassey expressed his ministry’s willingness in working together with Nda Mariam Jagne Family Foundation in maternal health and sport in the country.
Ousman Ceesay, a representative from the Ministry of Health and Social Welfare, expressed gratitude for witnessing the launching of the foundation.
According to Ceesay, tens of thousands of people die each year during pregnancy while millions of children have lost their mothers to maternal mortality.
He added that Nda Mariama Jagne Family Foundation has taken a giant step in contributing to the improvement of maternal health and sport in the country.
Mariam Njie-Jagne, wife of Pa Modou Jagne, said the foundation is a registered charity whose main focus is to help and complement government’s efforts in reducing the rate of maternal mortality.
According to Mrs Jagne, Pa Modou Jagne has had a personal experience of losing his mother to maternal mortality, which actually made them to focus on maternal health issues.
The co-founder of the foundation thanked all those who graced the launching, saying the foundation will do its level best to continue to support maternal health improvement and sport through football clinics.
