Jul 30, 2010, 5:11 PM

The 2010 Nawettan tournament organised by the sports committee of Basse Santosu commenced last Saturday 24th of July at the Basse mini stadium play grounds.

16 teams are competing for the championship title which consist only of the senior category.

The tournament started with an impressive performance as Canon FC beat Kuteh Jumbulu FC three-nil, Angal Futa beat Sabi FC 3-1 while the Super Cup champions T-Junction beat Alunharr FC by 2 goals to 1. Raising Stars played a goalless draw with Dego.

Speaking to Pointsport, Dawda Sankareh, a member of the Basse sub-zone committee, said the tournament started in a spirit of sportsmanship.

He is of the view that this year’s championship will be a trouble-free summer championship.

He further used the opportunity to reveal to our reporter that each participating team will receive prizes for their participation in the tournament.

Sankareh went further to heap praises for the benevolent support given to the organising committee by the Basse Association (BA).

Elsewhere in Brufut, eight teams will line up against each other at Brufut Lower Basic School  in the qualifiers.

On Friday, Dumbarton  will face Seaview.

Saturday's match will feature Rangers and Brufut Gardens while the last game will be played between Milan and Jabbis on Sunday to wrap up the qualifying games.

Meanwhile, the Memorial Trophy final of the late Fabakary Manneh known as Mburin is scheduled for Saturday 31st July 2010.

Zuwa FC the newly-established football club in Bakau got-off to a promising start in the 8-team qualifying rounds after enjoying a narrow 1-nil win over Birmingham in their opener at the Bakau Mini Stadium.

They collected a goalless draw against Backa Yard on Monday but still remain firm favourites to secure a place in the play-off after others failed to shine in the qualifying round should they secure at least a draw against Oslo United in their last match on Friday.

The Bakau New Town outfit is desperate to make their first appearance in the summer championship and this dream could come true considering their recent fantastic form which saw them collect four points in two matches as a result, despite their young age.

In Gunjur, last year’s league champions, Oxford United FC, will rub shoulders with the knock-out champions, Gamcel FC, in the long-awaited Gunjur Super Cup final billed for Sunday at the Gunjur playing grounds.

Both sides have played five competitive games. They drew four and Gamcel FC won once in the 2008-09 league semi finals in which Gamcel FC thrashed Oxford United FC 2-0 before they went on to clinch a double.

In the 2010 Gunjur Diamond Fitness Trophy Committee Junior Football Championship, Alex Sanchaba FC will meet Young Santos FC in the first semi-final today Friday 30th July 2010, while on Saturday 31st July 2010 Under Lion FC will face Sunderland FC in the second semi-final.
