To
make this year’s independence anniversary sports a success, the desk officer
for Sports at the Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education (MoBSE), Musa
Mendy, with support from the Regional Education Directorates (RED) and their
sports coordinators have completed the selection of athletes within Lower Basic
School category to take part in the championship.
Qualified
athletes from all regions were expected in Banjul yesterday, Sunday ahead of
the Tuesday’s independence anniversary celebration.
Regions
(3-6) are camped at the Friendship Hostel in Bakau, Region (2) at Siffoe Lower
Basic School while Region (1) qualified athletes are currently conducting their
daily training at Latri-Kunda Yirinyanya Lower Basic School.
This
year’s championship will take place at the Independence Stadium in Bakau with
prizes to be awarded to individual athletes. There will also be consolation
prizes for deserving persons while regions will be awarded based on their
performance during the championship.
MoBSE
desk officer for sports, Musa Mendy commended The Gambia Teachers’ Co-operative
Credit Union (GTUSSC) and Gambia National Olympic Committee (GNOC) for
sponsoring the Lower Basic School 2020 athletic championship both in cash and
in trophies.
In
another development, the office of the “desk officer for sports” announced that
selection process for the Senior Secondary School athletes is currently
underway across the country.
This
year’s Senior Secondary School athletic championship is slated for March 2020
at the Independent Stadium in Bakau.
