Mariam T Jallow grabs Brufut marathon top prize, hundreds of others thrill crowd

Some 432 professional and fun runners took part in the 18 Brufut Marathon Saturday with Gambian female long distance runner Mariama T. Jallow sweeping the gold medal and the lucrative Brussels Airline ticket, in the women’s 21 kilometre half marathon.

She beat a large field to arrive at the Brufut School finishing line amid cheers and clapping from onlookers.

In the same distance, Lamin Sanneh took gold for the men’s prize.

There were new champions crowned in the Km and 5 kilometers, as well as the 1.5 kilometers reserved for the running club.

The event was attended by Governor Lamin Sanneh of Western Region, who spoke on sports development and presided over the ceremony also addressed by Chairman Ba S. Jabbi and executive secretary Bas Jabbie.

The Gambia cycling association conducted a race from Kanilai to Brufut as part of the event with the three best winning brand new bicycles.

The 18 Brufut Marathon was supported by Gam-Petroleum, Gamcel, Banjul Breweries, Africell, DDS Swimming Pool, Friends of The Gambia Association, Pristine Consulting and JFin Money transfer.
