The Banjul Magistrates’ Court recently convicted and sentenced one Lamin Marong, a resident of Bakau Wasulung kunda, to a fine of D250,000 in default to serve three years in prison for a drugs offence.
The charge sheet stated that on 16 June 2011 at Bakau Wasulung kunda, Lamin Marong was found in possession of 16 grams of suspected cannabis sativa.
The convicted person pleaded guilty to the charge, and also admitted the facts of the case as narrated by the prosecutor.
In his plea of mitigation, Marong told the court that he was a first-time offender and urged the court to temper justice with mercy, as he is the breadwinner of his family.
The trial magistrate in passing sentence said the convicted person is a first-time offender, and had shown remorse.
