Loum wins 5th Abdoulie Saine Memorial draughts competition

Alagie Malick Loum of O.J. Junction on 27 February 2011 defeated Sulayman Norman of Latrikunda Unity, the defending champion of the competition in the final of the 5th Edition of the Abdoulie Saine Memorial Draughts Championship Competition.

Sponsored by Edrissa M. Sissoko, head of Mansajang Solicitors, the championship was played at Dobson Street in Banjul

The first two meetings of the final failed to produce a winner until in the third when Alagie Malick Loum edged pass the experience draughts player to be crowned the champion.

The winner, Alagie Malick Loum, received a trophy, a cash prize of D3,000 and 800 points to improve on his ranking, while the runner-up Sulayman Norman, received a cash prize of 2,000 and 700 points to also improve on his ranking.

Sulayman Marr took third and was awarded a cash prize of 1,000, a certificate and 600 points to add on to his ranking.

Pa Bojang secured fourth position and received a cash prize of D5,00 and 500 points to also add on to his ranking.

From the fifth to eighth positions, all the winners received a consolation prize of D200 each.

They were also awarded 400 points, 300 points, 200 points and 100 points to also add to their rankings.

Speaking to reporters, Momodou Dibba, President of the Gambia National Draughts Federation who is also President of the Gambia National Olympic Committee, said that last year's competition was a great success but described this year’s as very impressive, adding that the organization was "much more successful".

Dibba thanked the Sports Journalists Association of The Gambia for the good job of its members as they are working to promote sports in the country.

Dibba says they are working on modalities to organize trainings for members of the sports journalist association.

They are looking at to taking along a sports journalist to the London Olympic Games to avoid the dishing out of secondhand information.
