The Magistrates’ Court in Kanifing last Thursday remanded a local businessman charged with economic crimes.
Mam Sait Njie, a local businessman and proprietor of Makumbaya Farms located in the Kombo North district of the West Coast Region, was remanded in custody on the orders of the court, following his appearance before Magistrate Tabally.
The officer commanding prosecution at Serrekunda Police Station, ASP Habibu Sanyang, who represented the Inspector General of Police, applied for the transfer of the case to the high court, as the lower court lacks the jurisdiction to try the accused person because of the nature of his charge.
Magistrate Sheriff Tabally subsequently remanded the accused person.
Mr. Njie, who appeared in court without any legal representation, is expected to appear again in court on 4th August 2011.
Njie was recently arrested alongside former Permanent Secretary No.2 at the Ministry of Local Government and Lands, Abdoulie Manneh, Director of Lands and Survey, Malamin Jatta, and Malamin Bojang, the alkalo of Wulinkama village in the Kombo North district.
Sources said their arrest and subsequent arraignment is in connection with the findings and recommendations of the Lands Commission of Inquiry, which last month presented its report to President Yahya Jammeh.
