Know Your Status Football tournament exclusively sponsored by the Peace Corps is gathering pace in various districts across the country, Pointsport can confirm.

The championship, which kicked off on June 11, saw Lower Badibou beat Central Badibou 2-nil in a passionate encounter played at the Badibou Kerewan football grounds followed by another pulsating game when Lower Niumi entertained Jokadu to a narrow 1-nil win at the Essau playground on June 14.

Matches are expected to resume this weekend when Sanjali and Upper Badibou will rub shoulders at the Sanjali playground while Jokadu meet Upper Niumi at Kuntaya playground on June 19.

“The eight-week tournament is intended to raise the awareness of young people about HIV and Aids and by extension encourages them to know their status,” says Lamin K. Saidy, Regional Youth and Sports coordinator of North Bank Region.

This, officials believe, will help those infected with HIV and Aids to know their status in a bid to help minimize the spread of the disease. It will also help those who are found negative to prevent themselves better,” Saidy explained.

The event has also availed organisers the unique prospect to be engaged in different elements such as training of coaches on HIV and Aids issues for all the participants drawn from each district amongst a series of other activities.

The Department of Youth and Sports, North Bank Office, and the National Regional office are both partners to the initiative, Pointsport has gathered.
