Jeshwang male volleyball team and the Gambia Armed Forces female volleyball team have been crowned champions of the Gambia Volleyball Association (GVBA) Super Cup (Mayor’s Trophy.
Jeshwang male volleyball team beat the Gambia Armed Forces male team by 3sets to nil in the male category final played on 6 September 2013 at the Manneh Sillah Memorial Court in Banjul to be crowned champions whilst The Gambia Armed Forces female volleyball team beat Interior female volleyball team by the same sets on the same day and ground to be also crowned champions of the female category.
Each of the winners received a cash amount of D5,000, whilst each of the runners-up collected a consolation prize of D2,500.
In attendance at the Mayor’s Trophy final were Awa Sillah, the Deputy Mayor of Banjul City Council, who deputised Mayor Abdoulie Bah, Malamin Fofana represented the Ministry of Youth and Sports, Basketball Federation PRO Pap Njie, New Town West Ward Banjul Consular Pa Mamud Ceesay, among other protocols. There was as well a high turnout of fans.
According to Musa Casa Taal, president of the Gambia Volleyball Association (GVBA), the consolation prizes support received from the Lord Mayor of Banjul and BCC “amounted to D15,000”.
“This is as usual, whenever the GVBA sends a request to the Council they always come to our aid and give us support,” he said.
“This time around the GVBA deems it fit to name the Super Cup after the Mayor as a gesture of honour to the council,” he declared, while calling on other area councils to emulate BBC in their quest to boost sports development.
“Our gratitude goes to the Mayor and the entire council,” he concluded.
