President Yahya Jammeh, “in a show of African solidarity”, has given US$500,000 to President Ernest Bai Koroma and the people of Sierra Leone as Gambia‘s contribution towards the fight against the Ebola virus disease outbreak.
A press release issued by the embassy of Sierra Leone in Banjul said it was informed through a diplomatic note dated 26 August 2014, “that the Central Bank of The Gambia has effect the transfer of a generous donation of US$500,000 to the appropriate authorities in Freetown, Sierra Leone, to help in the fight against Ebola”.
It quoted the Gambian leader as stating: “As Africans we must take the lead and put up a show of African support. When your neighbour’s house is on fire, you should help with a bucket of water.”
Ambassador Soulayman Daramy said, “this is a demonstration of solidarity to a sisterly country…On behalf of my President, the government and people of Sierra Leone, I want to express sincere thanks and appreciation to President Yahya Jammeh, the government and people of The Gambia,” according to the release.
“When the Embassy passed on the information of the donation to Sierra Leoneans in The Gambia, they were joyful and expressed their appreciation and offered prayers for both President Yahya Jammeh and President Koroma”, the release further stated.
