Presiding Magistrate Gives Ultimatum

The presiding magistrate in the protracted false information case against Alasana S.T. Jammeh, the former Permanent Secretary at the Department of State for Religion Affairs has given ultimatum for the continuation of the case.

Magistrate Surahata Danso has pronounced that if the prosecution fails to proceed on the next adjourned date, he would have no option but to discharge the accused.

According to him, the case had never proceeded since it was first mentioned.

He subsequently adjourned the case to 2nd September 2009.

When the case was called it could not proceed, prompting the presiding magistrate to issue an ultimatum.

It could be recalled that P S Jammeh is standing trial for the offence of giving false information to a public servant.

According to the particulars of the offence, Mr. Jammeh sometimes in the year 2008, by virtue of his employment as the Permanent Secretary responsible for Religion Affairs claimed to have received directives from the Office of the President, to select Inter-continental Airways to transport pilgrims during 2008 Hajj, knowing the said to be false.

Mr. Jammeh denied the charge.
