The Gunjur Community Fisheries Project in Gunjur Kombo South last Sunday embarked on a clean-up exercise at the Gunjur beach with a view to providing a clean environment for healthy, quality and good delivery of services.

Addressing over 700 participants after the exercise, the Administrative Manager of Gunjur Community Fisheries Project, Mr. Alieu Nyakassi Touray encouraged the participants to be steadfast in making the beach side clean at all times.

Noting that living in a clean environment is acceptable by all and sundry, he said, all hands must be on deck to ensure the cleanliness of the place.

According to him, The Gambia especially Gunjur is ranked as one of the best in terms of fish exportation not only in West Africa but the whole continent. He expressed the need for villagers to collaborate and cooperate for the good of all.

This, he said, will help the project meet the demands of the government's policy and the European Union standards as they have experts from the government and EU.

Also speaking at the occasion was the Director of Fisheries, Mr. Famara Dampha who expressed his gratitude to workers and their co-ordinators. He described the exercise as a step in the right direction. He said it is a major concern for both the Ministry of Fisheries and Tourism to have clean beaches all over the country.

He encouraged them to keep up the momentum and called on others to emulate.

For his part, Mr. Yusupha Jassey, the Project Co-ordinator said it would be a continuous exercise, and urged that everyone at the beach side should be a security officer.

Other speakers at the ceremony included Mr. Janko Ceesay, Field Co-ordinator, Mr. Eliman Sarr and Mr. Tamsir Khan, all from various committees.
