The poll in the West African minerals producer is meant to complete a transfer of power from a military junta to civilians, but has been delayed repeatedly since September over a lack of preparation and street clashes among rival political camps.
Electoral commission chief General Siaka Sangare told reporters he had proposed the new date during a meeting with acting President General Sekouba Konate on Monday. Konate, the head of the ruling military junta, has yet to ratify the date.
Sangare was chosen to lead the electoral commission last week after one of the presidential candidates, ex-prime minister Cellou Dallein Diallo, accused the previous election chief of bias.
Both Diallo and his rival, Alpha Conde, have said they support Sangare’s leadership of the electoral body, removing one of the major stumbling blocks to holding the poll.
