The authorities of Gambia Tourism Board over the weekend conducted a mass demolition exercise of illegal structures within the tourism development area, TDA.
According to GTBoard officials, this was part of developing the tourism development area to standard.
Senior officials from the Gambia Tourism Board, headed by the director general of the Gambia Tourism Board, and security officers were present during the exercise.
Speaking to journalists on the ground, Abdoulie Hydara, director general of Gambia Tourism Board, said the exercise was part of demolishing “illegal structures” within the tourism development area and to standardize and ensure quality and a safe environment within the tourism development area.
All the structures that were demolished within the TDA were illegal structures, he said.
He added that before one should construct anything in the tourism development area he/she must get the authority to do so from the government.
“People just come and do whatever they want within this area,” he said, adding that such an act must be discouraged.
