Ansumana Jarju and Alfusainey Jatta, charged with robbery and conspiracy, were arraigned on 16 September 2014 before magistrate Tabally of the Kanifing magistrates’ court.

The charge sheet stated that Ansumana Jarju and Alfusainey Jatta on 5 September 2014, at Bakau in the Kanifing Municipality, conspired to rob Guaranty Trust Bank Bakau Branch, and thereby committed an offence.

The charge sheet further stated that Ansumana Jarju and Alfusainey Jatta did commit an offence when, armed with a gun, they robbed Guaranty Trust Bank of the sum of D410, 120 and thereby committed an offence.

Ansumana Jarju pleaded guilty to the robbery charge, but not to the conspiracy charge. Alfusainey Jatta denied any wrongdoing.

Having read the charge sheet to the accused persons, the director of public prosecutions, S.H. Barkun, applied for the case to be transferred to the special criminal court at the High Court in Banjul.

He further told the court that the accused persons would be provided with counsel by the state to defend them.

Magistrate Tabally then granted the application, and transferred the case to the SCC.

He ordered that the accused persons be remanded at the remand wing of the State Central Prison Mile 2, pending the hearing of the case at the high court.
