The 2009\10 GFA Division One League Champions, the Gambia Ports Authority overcame a frustrating 90 minutes encounter, to snatch a pulsating 5-4 penalty shootout win over Bakau United and Samger combined team to lift President Jammeh’s trophy, at the Serrekunda East Mini-stadium on Saturday.
Both sides led a hard-fought encounter, but all their brilliant attacking options and some wonderful individual brilliance were not good enough to earn them any victory in the regulation period, thus ending in a penalty shootout.
The GPA are no doubt in the best form of their lives, as they recorded their second title in a year in a stunning fashion. The ferry boys as many called them eventually became the winner of the first-ever organised President Jammeh trophy, which was staged by the Gambia Football Association, in collaboration with Messrs Juan Garcia Angular from Spain, Juan Antonio De Moral from The Gambia consulate in Barcelona and Ticiano Rottenstein.
The primary objective of the weeklong tournament is to expose the players to scout from European clubs, such as Athletico Madrid, Espagnol, and other Spanish club representatives who were in Banjul to witness the tournament.
They were rewarded with an outstanding award, as they walked away with a trophy and a cash prize of D9, 000, while the runners-up collected D3, 000.
The final was attended by scores of high dignitaries, including Jammeh Bojang, the Secretary-General of the Gambia Football Association.
