In his briefing statement, Hon. Abdoulie Bojang, Speaker of the National Assembly, said the meeting was the annual pre-session briefing on the forthcoming 2014 PAC/PEC joint session on the Auditor General’s Report on the audited accounts of the Government of The Gambia for the year ended 2011.
It was also the session to examine the annual activity reports and audited financial statements of all public enterprises and agencies of the Gambia government, he added.
Speaker Bojang told the gathering that the primary objective of the constitutional exercise is to carry out their lawful oversight function over public enterprises and agencies and the public services.
“As people’s representatives, we are out to ensure that Government and its public service, institutions, enterprises, and agencies are all accountable to the Gambian taxpayers through their elected representatives in the National Assembly,” said Speaker Bojang.
Hon. Bojang added that the oversight mandate is provided for in the various sections of the 1997 constitution of The Gambia and the Standing Orders of the National Assembly.
According to Speaker Bojang, the law requires that all public enterprises and agencies must submit their annual activity reports and audited financial statements to the National Assembly within three months of the end of the financial year.
