The ongoing familiarisation tour of the new Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Fatim Badjie, to the various health facilities under her Ministry, it is believed, will give her the opportunity to have first-hand information about departments under her purview.
The tour will, no doubt, enable the Minister to know for herself the constraints facing her different units.
We could also observe, from her words, her concern about trying to help in improving the service delivery at the RVTH.
We are of the belief that our health sector is one of the most important sectors in the country, and all efforts should be made to make it a successful sector.
The development of the health sector must remain a top priority of government. A healthy people obviously constitute a healthy nation, hence the need to invest more in the health sector.
We urge health officials at the various departments to make plausible suggestions and recommendations to the Health Minister, for the betterment of the sector.
Most of the time, when a minister is on tour, officials some times only focus on the shortcomings of their departments, but would never make suggestions on how, as a team, to help develop the sector.
This should not be the norm, since developing the sector calls for collaborative efforts.
It is high time people knew that, without good health, it would be very difficult to achieve meaningful economic development. Our advice, therefore, is that let us always be mindful about our health, which is the health of the nation, to achieve the Millennium Development Goals 4 and 5.
We would like to urge the Minister to keep up the good work, as well as calling on staff of the sector to help her succeed in this challenging sector.
We, therefore, urge health officials to work as a team in order to achieve the desired goal for the sector, since without unity, hard work and prudent service it will be very difficult to achieve a fruitful and significant health sector.
