The president of the Gambia National Olympic Committee (GNOC), Alhagie Momodou Dibba, has said he was delighted with the way and manner this year’s May Day Sports was organised.

The 22nd edition of the May Day Sports was staged at its traditional grounds, the Independence Stadium, with great attendance from companies and spectators.

The GNOC boss was also impressed about the performance of the companies and institutions who took part in the May Day Sports.

Speaking at the event held at the Independence Stadium in Bakau on Tuesday, Mr Dibba expressed gratitude for being able to witness the increasing growth of the participants both in terms of new companies establishing in The Gambia and in terms of the new renewed interest of public sector institutions and agencies.

“May I seize this opportunity on behalf of the GNOC to thank His Excellency the President of the Republic of The Gambia, Sheikh Professor Alh Dr Yahya A.J.J. Jammeh for his continued support to the Bureau, and also welcome the newly appointed Minister of Youths and Sports, Mr Alieu K. Jammeh. Thank you Mr Minister for your continuing commitment,” he stated.

Dibba said the National Sports Council was given the task of coordinating the civil service team for this year’s edition.

He also looks forward to the continued participation of the public sector in the manifestation of the annual tradition of May Day Mass Sports.

In the drive for sports development and excellence, the GNOC president expressed optimism that such mass sports and participation would go a long way in opening up and attracting the required commitment and support from the civil society, particularly compatriots in the private sector, and using the mega event as a platform to invest in sport.

To the workers he said: “I want to register my sincere gratitude through you to your superiors who have supported and encouraged you so that you could take part in the May Day Mass Sports.

“Your solidarity to the very ideals of keeping fit through sports gives evidence to your unflinching support and commitment to the adage that a ‘healthy nation is a productive nation’.”

Dibba applauded the sponsors, such as Samsung through Q-Group, Julbrew and IOC, for their tireless contribution towards the success of this year’s May Day Sports.

The event was marked by sports competitions in both field and track events by participating companies.
