The Point has learnt through impeccable sources that Beatrice Allen, acting-president of the Gambia National Olympic Committee (GNOC) and member of the International Olympic Committee, was Friday arrested and charged.
Ms Allen was arrested alongside Ousman Wadda and Muhammed Janneh, treasurer and accounting officer of the GNOC respectively.
According to our sources, the trio, who have been charged with theft, are accused of allegedly embezzling funds of the GNOC amounting to D34,000.
Sources further said that Ms Allen and Mr Wadda appeared at the Kanifing Magistrates' Court on Friday. They have denied the charges and are remanded in state custody till today, Monday, when the case is expected to resume.
The arrest and subsequent charge of the GNOC trio came barely a month to the much talked about GNOC presidential election.
Momodou Dibba and Abdoulie 'Baks' Touray are vying for the GNOC presidential post in what appears to be a very controversial election slated for 12 February 2011.
One time vice president of the GNOC, Ms Allen became acting-president last July following the conviction and sentencing to death of Lt. General Lang Tombong Tamba, former Chief of Defence Staff, on non-sports grounds.
