Gambia Football Federation (GFF) President Lamin Kabba Bajo is hopeful that the Scorpions still stand a chance of making their debut in the continent’s biggest football competition.

Currently, The Gambia is second from bottom in Group M of the 2017 Gabon African Cup of Nations qualifiers, following 1-0 home defeat to the Indomitable Lions of Cameroon on Sunday.

Speaking to reporters at the Independence Stadium shortly after the game, Bajo said “the group is still open”.

The GFF official is optimistic that the darling Scorpions will pick up and build on ahead of their next game.

“During the game (with Cameroon), the boys played to standard. The qualification just started. We have more matches to play, so we can still make it,” Bajo said.

“Anything can happen in the subsequent games. It could be dramatic as the qualification progresses, despite the Gambia securing only a single point in two games.”

The GFF official said the Gambian players did their best in the match.
