GFD commemorates world disability day

The Gambia Federation of the Disabled (GFD), in collaboration with the Department of Social Welfare, VSO and other stakeholders on Thursday 3rd December 2009, joined the rest of the world in celebrating World Disability Day.

The cerebration which took a form of march-past from Arch 22nd to 22nd July Square, was dubbed "Make millennium development goals inclusive."

Speaking on behalf of the Mayor of Banjul, the Public Relations Officer of Banjul City Council, Mr. Dawda Jones, said people with disabilities are competent and also contribute towards the development of the country.

He expressed his office readiness in supporting the Gambia Federation of the Disabled (GFD) whenever the need arises.

Speaking earlier, the Chairperson of the Gambia Federation of the Disabled (GFD) Mr. Muhammed Korah, said 3rd December 2009 is an important day in the life of people with disabilities, noting that the day was set aside by the UN General Assembly in 1981, aimed at creating awareness on disability rights.

He stated that the declaration of this day was followed by the Resolution 1993 of 29 March 1993 of the UN Commission on Human Rights in which member states were requested to highlight its observance every year.
