Gamtel maintain top spot as GFA league resumes on Saturday

Feb 5, 2010, 8:24 PM | Article By: Lamin Drammeh

Gamtel celebrated a hard fought 1-nil victory to succeed Steve Biko at the top of the 12-club championship, at the Serrekunda West Mini-stadium in the Week Third fixtures of the ongoing league championship. Since then, the Telecommunication boys as they are widely known have done extremely well to maintain their place in the first position.

They extended their lead at the top of the table as they enjoyed a resounding 2-nil victory over Brikama United that are still struggling to register their first win in many league matches to stay on top of the league as the GFA league is set to resume on Saturday.

The Bakau giant killers Steve Biko who got-off to a perfect start to the campaign with two straight wins are struggling to collect their third victory in as many games sitting second place, four points adrift of leaders Gamtel.

The current leaders will meet Bakau United in the weekend clash at the Serrekunda East Mini-stadium, hoping to extend the lead to maintain a place at the top of the table.

Closest rivals Steve Biko, on the other hand, will leave no stone unturned in trying to return to their impressive start to the season after failing to hit the form which saw them finished second in the table last season for the first in many years.

They could welcome back key striker Alasan Camara against Armed Forces who is yet to appear for the Bakau giants so far, while attack-partner Assan Jatta, who made his first appearance for the club in a goalless draw against Samger in the mid-way fixtures will once again be available to boost up Abdoulie Bojang's men's chance of climbing at the top of the table for the second time in the league.

Armed Forces who collected their first win against Real mid-week will go into Biko clash keeping their fingers firmly on the forthcoming CAF championship league encounter. But they could also move up if they can win this match when they take on Biko, at the Independence Stadium on Sunday.

Third place holders on seven points, the Gambia Port Authority could also move at the top of the table when they win Wallidan, who are badly struggling to register their first win in four fixtures.

The two sides will meet on Sunday at the Serrekunda West Mini-stadium.
