Baboucarr Jarju has been elected as the president of the Gambia College Press Club for 2013/2014 academic year.
The annual handing-out ceremony, held at the Brikama College Campus, brought together a good number of members of the association and other students of the college.
The Gambia College Press Club was established three years ago by students of the college to inform, educate and entertain students within the campuses of Banjul and Brikama.
Its membership is however drawn from the schools of Education, Nursing, Midwifery, Public Health, and Agriculture of the Gambia College.
It also serves as a medium through which all information from the college’s administration, students’ union and individuals are channeled onto their respective audiences.
The club has also introduced a ‘broadcasting week’, a platform where members showcase their talents in broadcasting headlines, poems, views and memos in both English and local languages .
As part of its constitutional mandate, the leadership is handed over to competent students to run the association annually.
In his inaugural speech, the newly elected president thanked the former executive for their tireless efforts in promoting the cause of the club.
Mr Jarju says the occasion symbolised another significant milestone in the development of the Gambia College Press Club.
Jarju further appealed for members of the club to close ranks with him to raise the flag of the club higher while calling on them to exercise discipline and righteousness.
“We must not let competence, professionalism, and honesty slip off our hands,” Jarju advised.
He says in his term in office, he will widen the scope to outside the vicinity of the college and team up with other institutions to share knowledge and experience.
He further revealed that he would solicit for funds to enhance their activities.
He however appealed for the support of everyone to fulfill the task at hand to extend the impact of the club to the college and the nation.
