Sunday’s win at Antoinette Tubman Stadium in Monrovia, Liberia, saw the Gambia U-20 take a bold stage towards qualifying for the 2015 African U-20 Youth Championship to be hosted by Senegal next year. The Gambian team under the guidance of head coach Tapha Manneh, who are expected back home on Tuesday, hope to finish the job on home soil in two weeks’ time when they host their Liberian counterparts.
The Gambia U-20 qualified for the Africa U-20 Youth Championship twice: in 2007 in Congo Brazzaville, where they won bronze, and in 2011 in South Africa, where they were eliminated at the group stage.
The Gambia team departed the country on Thursday for Monrovia, Liberia, with a 30-man delegation.
Tapha Manneh and his charges hope to complete their assignment in Banjul when they host their West African counterparts in the next two weeks.
The Gambia U-20 began their preparation for the first-leg away encounter to Liberia with a 2-nil win over the Local-based Selection, a 1-nil win over Casa Sport, before wrapping up their test with a 1-all draw against the Local National team.
