Funnacosi Club based in Serrekunda Lower Basic School yesterday donated blood to the Edward Francis Small Teaching Hospital in Banjul.

Speaking at the ceremony held at the hospital grounds, Mariama Jammeh, programme manager for National Blood Transfusion, thanked the club for the good initiative, saying the donated blood donated would help to save lives.

Some times, she noted, they would find it difficult to get certain blood groupings but such donations received by them would make their work easy.

She assured the club that the blood donated will be properly screened and later given to patients at the hospital.

The EFSTH is the only referral hospital hence it needs to be supported with blood, he said, thanking the blood donors for their good initiative.

For her part, Penda Sidibeh, personal assistant to the Chief Medical Director, also thanked the club for the donation and urged other Gambians to emulate the gesture.

She also appealed with the club to make the donation an annual event, saying the hospital management is appreciative of the club’s initiative of donating blood to the hospital.

Saikou Camara, president of the club, in his remarks on the occasion, said this year marks their 50th anniversary, as they decided to donate blood to the hospital.

They always appreciate how the hospital management welcomes them, he added.

“The club’s objective is to donate blood as much as we can,” he said.

Sheikh Ceesay, a trainer, also spoke at the ceremony.
