Four men were recently convicted and sentenced by the Brikama Magistrates' Court for store-breaking, stealing and conspiracy.

The convicts were Malick Gibba, Yusupha Janneh, Sulayman Sey and Bakary Darboe.

Malick Gibba, Sulayman Sey and Bakary Darboe were each sentenced to a fine of D2,000 in default to serve one year in prison, after begging the court to temper justice with mercy.

Yusupha Janneh, the eldest among the convicts, was sentenced to a fine of D5,000 in default to serve one year in prison.

The facts of the case as narrated by the prosecuting officer, Inspector L. Touray, stated that the incident happened between November and December 2010.

He said the complainant left his store key with the first convict, Malick Gibba, who was his employee at the time, and travelled to Mecca for Umura.

He further narrated that the first convict conspired with the other three convicts and they went into the store and stole the items worth D100,000.

Inspector L. Touray further narrated that on 8 March 2011, at around 1a.m., the first convict again went to the store with his friend, adding that there was a watchman who shouted "thief" and the convict ran away.

The complainant was informed about it and the matter was later reported to Old Yundum Police Station, he said, adding that the first convict was arrested and he confessed and named the other three convicts, who were also arrested.

The recovered items were later tendered and admitted as exhibits.
