The Ministry of Fisheries on Friday concluded a two-day national awareness workshop on the International Tribunal for the Laws of the Sea (ITLOS), advisory opinion on illegal, unreported, unregulated (IUU) fishing.

The forum was organised in collaboration with the Dakar-based Sub-Regional Fisheries Commission (SRFC) at Ocean Bay Hotel in Bakau.

Speaking on the occasion, Abdoulie T.B. Jarra, permanent secretary at the Ministry of Fisheries, said during the 14th extra-ordinary session of the SRFC conference of ministers, a resolution was adopted authorising the permanent secretariat of SRFC to request from the United Nations ITLOS of the Convention on Minimum Conditions for Access.

He explained that the request was aim at providing guidelines to SRFC member states on the most effective institutional and legal means to eliminate IUU fishing in the SRFC zone.

Mr Jarra said the request was to shed light on the international legal system governing IUU fishing, and to sustain shared or common interest stocks management.
