Minister Kolley was received by the GRA Commissioner General, Ansuman Trawally, and other senior officials of the institution and was taken on a conducted tour within the various offices of the GRA including Tax Office, Human Resource Centre and the office of the Commissioner General.
"Basically, the purpose of my visit is to come and see the working conditions of the staff as the Minister of Finance and Economic Affairs, and also to see how the staff of GRA are operating and their constraints,” Kolley told reporters after a closed door meeting with the GRA management.
“I had a meeting with the senior officials of the authority, and they highlighted some of the constraints they are facing during the delivery of services,” he noted.
The meeting was very fruitful, Kolley disclosed, and advised them to work as a team, because one could not expect to know all; so they needed to work as a team, which was very important.
“As staff of the authority, you needed to be professional and honest in your duty, and do not allow to have with you too much cash otherwise it may easily tempt you,” he said.
He said during the meeting, one of the major constraints highlighted to him was to facilitate mobility in order to ease their travel difficulties to their various tax outlets in the other parts of the country.
Another important issue raised in the meeting was the need for capacity building for the staff, which he said was in line with his ministry’s policy in order to have qualified persons.
“I advised them to hire qualified person, when they are to hire somebody for the position,” he said.
