FEGAMSO Congress Slated for January

The biennial general congress of the Federation of the Gambia Muslim Students' Organisation (FEGAMSO) is scheduled to run from the 16thto 18thJanuary 2009.

FEGAMSO is the umbrella body charged with the responsibility of co-ordinating the activities of all school based Islamic associations in all English and ArabicSchools in The Gambia.

According to sources, during the congress, a new executive shall be elected, the constitution will be reviewed and a plan of action for the next two years will be formulated.

The sources further revealed that the national congress as usual would be attended by delegates from different regions in the country.

Meanwhile, the current executive of the federation includes Mustapha Barry as president, Momodou L. Jatta 1stvice-president, Hamidou Jallow 2ndvice-president, Abubacarr Bojang treasurer, Nfamara Jawneh PRO, Alhagie Darboe programme officer, Mariama Khan social secretary and Awa Damba assistant social secretary.

The federation aims, among other things, to promote and propagate Islam among its members and the entire youth of The Gambia, promote moral and academic excellence, encourage peaceful coexistence of all religions, sects, races and tribes and to contribute toward the socio-economic development of the country.

Founded in 1995 and formally registered with the Attorney Generals Chambers, FEGAMSO has the following as its major activities.

Organising of conferences, inter-school Quranic recitation competition and speech (oratory) competition, organising youth camps, radio and TV talk shows, environmental sanitation, distribution of Islamic literature and praying materials as well as hosting of Iftars (fast breaking) during the month of Ramadan.

Among the future pans of the federation are the construction of a secretariat and the putting up of educational and skills centres.

The sources went further to reveal that the January congress will be held within the Greater Banjul Area.
