FAWEGAM poised to deepen career consciousness in girls

Forum for African Women’s Educationists Gambia Charter (FAWEGAM) will today organize a career day for girl students.

The forum is meant to inculcate and deepen career consciousness in students, especially girls.

Speaking in an interview with Yaicondi Njie Eribo, National Coordinator of FAWEGAM, said: “FAWEGAM is organizing FAWEGAM 2011 Career Day Fair. The purpose of the day is to bring potential employers and girls that graduating from Grade 12 this year. The day will offer them the opportunity to choose a career.”

She said her office is encouraging girls to enter maths and English, adding that they invited the University of The Gambia so girls can know the course to pursue in future.

“We invited MDI, GTTI, the banks, GSM companies, the army, schools within Greater Banjul area, so that they can choose the career they want,” she disclosed.

The Career Day fair was sponsored by the US embassy through the Women for Action.

She further added that FAWEGAM’s objective is to develop girls for sustainability, so that they are educated in science and maths, technology, and to become professionals in the future.

“We also aim to empower girls so that they can get out of poverty through education and career choices,” she said.

Madam Eribo said FAWEGAM has created mother clubs in many schools in the country were they advocate for access to education and now “we are talking of quality education”.
