The Brikama Magistrates' Court on Wednesday 6 October 2010 remanded in custody one Salifu Badjie, an ex-soldier, until the 18 of October when the court is expected to pass sentence on him.

Salifu pleaded guilty to a charge of attempting to commit arson by setting fire on the bed sheet and mattress of his biological brother, Yaya Badjie, at Sohm village in the Kombo East district of the Western Region on 5 September 2010.

He said his brother took his D100, 000, and that was the reason why he burnt his house.

Narrating the facts of the case, the police prosecutor, Sgt 1260 Kolley, told the court that it happened on 5 September 2010 at Sohm village.

The complainant, Yaya Badjie, greeted the accused, who never responded. Instead, the accused person told Yaya that "if you ever come near me, I will harm you, burn your house, kill you and find myself in Casamance", according to the prosecution.

To the surprise of the complainant, Salifu Badjie maintained his words, went ahead and burnt the complainant living room, the prosecutor continued.

He said the matter was reported to the PIU at Sohm check-point who arrested the accused person, and took him to Mandinaba Police Station where his cautionary and voluntary statements were obtained, and he was later charged with the offence.

At this stage, the case was adjourned for plea of mitigation and sentencing.
