Driver Jailed with Hard labour

Following a plea of guilt to the offence of rash and negligent act causing death, one Alhagie Badara Mbye was recently convicted and sentenced to three years in prison with hard labour.

The sentence was administered by the Principal Magistrate Kayode of the Brikama Magistrates' Court.

According to the facts of the case as narrated by the prosecuting officer, Sgt 553 Abdoulie Jammeh, the incident happened on 23rd June 2009 at Sinchu Alagie. He said the convict was driving a motor vehicle from Wellingara heading to Sinchu Alagie and upon his arrival at a junction he knocked the deceased one Alhagie Abdoulie Bah. He added that the deceased was rushed to the hospital were he was pronounced death.

Officer Jammeh further stated that the scene was visited by the police MobileTraffic Unit who constructed the scene of the accident. He said a cautionary and voluntary statement was obtained from the convict in the presence of an independent witness.
