Democracy on course in Senegal!

Mar 27, 2012, 1:39 PM

The outcome of last Sunday’s re-run of the election in Senegal is a clear testimony that the voice of the people has prevailed in the neighbouring country.

It is a clear indication to politicians that power indeed belongs to the people, and not to them.

The defeat of Abdoulaye Wade by his main rival Macky Sall, and his subsequent acceptance of defeat shows that Senegal is a truly democratic state.

The peaceful transfer of power in Senegal following Sunday’s election is commendable, and all those who believe in genuine democracy would rejoice with the Senegalese.

Mr Wade should have left a good legacy, had he stepped down without pushing his controversial third-term bid.

Even though Wade wanted to remain in power, the people of Senegal made it clear to him that they cannot compromise their democracy.

We commend all Senegalese who struggle for democracy in their country.

The latest political development in Senegal is a clear indication to other African leaders that people are getting fed up with self-perpetuating rule.

We congratulate President-elect Macky Sall for his victory, and urge him to equally respect the constitution and not to betray the trust and confidence of the people of Senegal.

We urge all Senegalese to rally and support their new leader, to move their country forward.

Democracy is all about the government of the people, by the people and for the people .

Once more, we say bravo to the people of Senegal for speaking out loud and clear.
