Defence opens in attempted rape case

Defence opened recently in the case involving one Matina Neve, who was accused of attempted rape before the Brikama Magistrates’ Court, presided over by Magistrate Sainabou Singhateh.

In his testimony, Neve told the court he could remember the day in question when he was coming from the shop and met the complainant with her boyfriend standing on the roadside.

He said there was exchange of words which resulted into a fight, adding that the complainant’s boyfriend took his mobile phone and money and ran away.

He said he told the complainant that the only thing he needed was to get his mobile and money, adding that the complainant told him that she would take him to the alkalo, who was related to her boyfriend.

According to him, on arrival at the alkalo’s compound, the alkalo called one Yankuba, stating that while the complainant was talking to the said Yankuba, a man by the name Lamin also came.

He said the complainant also narrated to Lamin, who told her to go to the house to settle the matter.

Lamin and Yankuba, he explained, later drove with the complainant without telling him anything.

He added that later they came with two police officers, who took him to the police station, where he gave his statement and the police told him that the complainant said he attempted to rape her.

The case was then adjourned till 17 September 2012.
