The Special Criminal Court in Banjul presided over by Justice Emmanuel Nkea is today expected to deliver judgment in the case involving ex-police chief Ensa Badjie, Lt. Col Mam Matarr Secka, former army transport commander, and Major Kuluteh, former commander of the military police unit at the Yundum army barracks.
The three former senior security officers were being tried under a 51-count charge, which included drugs-related offences.
Today’s judgment would mark the end of the more than two years legal battle, which saw the prosecution call several witnesses and tendered exhibits, and defence also called several witnesses and tendered exhibits.
The 1st accused person, Ensa Badjie, and the 2nd accused, Lt. Col Mam Matarr Secka, were being defended by Lawyer B.S. Touray, while the 3rd accused, Major Kuluteh, was defended by Lawyer L.K. Mboge.
Ruling on Mambury Njie bail application today
Meanwhile, Justice M. Abdoullah of the Banjul High Court is today expected to deliver ruling in the bail application filed by the former minister, Mambury Njie.
It would be recalled that Mambury Njie was arraigned at the Banjul Magistrates’ Court and charged with economic crime.
However, he was remanded at the Mile 2 State Central Prison and the case was transferred to the High Court, which has jurisdiction to hear the matter.
The particulars of offence read at the lower court stated that Mambury Njie, between 2006 and 2010 in Banjul and diverse places in The Gambia, intentionally and recklessly did an act which was detrimental to the economy of The Gambia.
