The
ambassador of the Republic of Cuba to The Gambia yesterday visited The Point
Newspaper. H.E Sr. Ruben G. Abelenda was accompanied by Dr. Anaris, head of
Cuban medical team and Dr. Maria Jnes assistant head of Cuban medical team in
The Gambia.
In
his remarks, Ambassador Abelenda hailed The Point Newspaper for its balance and
diverse coverage.
He
said the meeting with Gambian newspapers is to strengthen relations between The
Gambia and Cuba as well as thank them for the coverage of Cuban events.
He
pointed out that they aim to continue going forward in supporting The Gambia,
saying he loves The Gambia whose people are similar to Cuba for being friendly
“despite the challenges we encounter.”
He
described The Gambia as a dignified country that deserves to be known
worldwide. He recalled that last year marked the 40th Anniversary of
Gambia-Cuba relations.
He
highlighted his aim to collaborate with other ambassadors to strengthen their
work as well as send young African journalists for trainings.

Pap Saine, co-publisher of The Point Newspaper, said the media has a key role
to play in strengthening relations between countries and people, saying The
Point is here to promote peace.
He
explained that The Point is the only newspaper in The Gambia with five
international awards and also the only bilingual newspaper in the country. He
added that the newspaper is known worldwide.

Njie, editor-in-chief of The Point Newspaper, thanked Ambassador Abelenda and
his team for the visit.
Mr.
Njie described The Point as a great newspaper, adding that the aim of the paper
is to remain as diverse as it could.
“We
are impressed with the relations between The Gambia and Cuba,” he said, adding
that as members of the media “we will ensure we contribute quota towards
maintaining the smooth relations.”
