Mr. Alpha Jallow, the Director of Parks and Wildlife Management, has raised concerns over what he described as the way and manner in which certain unscrupulous people in and around the suburbia are bent on jumping into the reserve forest park to destroy newly planted trees.
He raised this concern while delivering his remarks at a day-long tree-planting exercise, conducted by ASSET and the Department of Parks &Wild Life, in collaboration with the Society of Gambia Sculptures over the weekend.
Mr. Jallow described the act as 'very inhuman and unacceptable', thus calling on the community to put an end to the practice. He noted that plans were in the offing to come up with some sensitisation programmes, geared towards eradicating the menace.
He underscored the importance of trees, in particular to humankind, adding that it should be a collective responsibility of each and every Gambian to at least plant a tree for the benefit of the future generation.
Mr. Jallow also warned intruders to desist from the practice as, he put it, it would frustrate their efforts in preserving the flora and fauna. He revealed that plans are underway for the extension of Abuko nature reserve, which he noted, would involve the participation of all and sundry.
He therefore urged the community and other institutions to plant more trees for the benefit of the future generation.
For Mr. Jallow, the importance and protection of the environment cannot be over-emphasised, noting that it is the duty of every citizen to contribute their quota towards the protection of wildlife.
