China
has congratulated the Gambian government and people on the smooth and peaceful
presidential election held on December 1, 2016.
A
press release from the Chinese Embassy in The Gambia stated that President Xi
Jinping had sent a message to President-elect Adama Barrow congratulating him
for winning the just concluded Presidential election, and expressing hope of
working with his government for the good of both nations.
“China
respects the will of the Gambian people, and looks forward to deepening
friendly relations and expanding mutually-beneficial cooperation between the
two countries,” the release stated.
It
further said: “On December 2, 2016, President Xi Jinping of the People’s
Republic of China sent a message of congratulations to President-elect Adama
Barrow of The Gambia. President Xi stated in the congratulatory message that
since China and The Gambia resumed diplomatic relations in March this year, the
friendly and mutually-beneficial cooperation in various fields has been
advancing extensively, which promises a bright future.”
The
release stated that facts have shown that the resumption of diplomatic ties
between China and The Gambia conforms with the trend of time, and is in the
fundamental interests of the two countries and peoples.
“President
Xi reaffirmed the great importance he attaches to the development of
China-Gambia relationship, and expressed his readiness to make joint efforts
with his Gambian counterpart to further deepen the bilateral relations so as to
deliver greater benefits to the two countries and peoples,” the release
concluded.
